Mount Everest: The ice that has been frozen for 2000 years is melting in 25 years


 

According to a CNN report citing the study, the melting of glaciers on the summit of Everest is a sign of a major catastrophe. The drinking water, the irrigation water, the streams of hydroelectricity - all these glaciers come from the throat water.

Studies have shown that the ice that took 2,000 years to freeze in the South Cole Glacier melted in just 25 years. Which means it's about to be the most delusional time of the year, as well.

The report, published in the journal Nature Portfolio Journal of Climate and Atmospheric Science, claims that although much research has been done on glacier melting, little attention has been paid to the world's highest glaciers.

In 2019, a team of scientists and mountaineers went to the South Cole Glacier, six of them from the University of Maine. They collected samples from a 10 meter long piece of ice.

They also set up two automatic weather stations at the highest places in the world to collect data. They are trying to answer the question of how much the most distant glaciers are being affected by man-made climate change.
Paul Mayewski, head of the expedition and director of the Climate Change Institute at the University of Maine, said: "The answer to that question is, yes, it's being affected. And since 1990, the effects have been significant. "

Researchers say they are convinced that man-made climate change is affecting the highest peaks on Earth and that it is upsetting the balance of the ice sheet.

Once glacier ice is exposed, the 55-meter-high ice sheet melts in just 25 years. Researchers say the iceberg may have been melting since the 1950's, but it has been melting faster since the 1990's.

The melting of glaciers can cause changes in humidity levels and wind patterns. Researchers have warned that the survival of the glacier-dependent population could be threatened in the future.

In that expedition in 2019, three Guinness World Records were set. Collection of ice cubes at an altitude of 6,020 m from the highest point, microplastics being found at an altitude of 6,440 m above the ground and setting up of meteorological stations at an altitude of 6,430 m above sea level.

The meteorological stations are the first meteorological stations to be set up in an area known as 'Death Zone'. An area above 6,000 meters above normal sea level is called a 'death zone' because climbing that altitude is very dangerous and has very low oxygen content.
